Procaine is a kind of local anesthetics, which belongs to ester local anesthetics. The anesthetic efficacy is relatively short, generally lasting only 45 to 60 minutes, and its penetration and diffusion force are relatively poor, so it is not used for surface anesthesia. Small doses inhibit the central nervous system, resulting in lethargy and dull pain response. Procaine is hydrolyzed by plasma cholinesterase to produce aminobenzoic acid, which can weaken the efficacy of sulfonamides. It acts on the same enzyme as succinylcholine, which can prolong the muscle relaxation effect of succinylcholine. Anticholinesterase drugs can inhibit the degradation of procaine, thus increasing the toxicity of procaine.
